April is Mathematics Awareness Month in Round Rock ISD. The purpose of Mathematics Awareness Month is to develop and promote public understanding and appreciation of mathematics. This year‟s theme is mathematics and sports which highlights the intersection of the sports world with the wide world of mathematics.

Baseball player Larry Doby became the first African-American player on the Cleveland Indians and also the first in the American League when he debuted (first appeared) in 1947. He was also The 2nd black player to manage a major league team when he became manager of the Chicago White Sox in 1978.

Conversations of Hope

RRISD is offering Spanish-speaking parent workshops titled "Conversations of Hope" as a way to provide information on a variety of issues such as TAKS, the RRISD school system, and many other topics in Spanish. The group meets every Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. in the Round Rock HS 700 building teachers lounge; no RSVP is necessary. For more information, parents can contact the Parent Support Specialist at their child's campus or Maria Rosas Garcia at 428-7984. Workshops include:

May 4 - Presentor, Kathy Hernandez, RRHS Lead Counselor

Next Week: TAKS Test

Round Rock ISD students will join other public school students in the state in taking the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test April 6-8 and April 26-30. 7th Graders will take Math Tuesday 27th and Reading Wednesday the 28th.

The district asks parents to make sure their child is in school on time and present during the testing periods. Please refrain from making doctor appointments during this time as all students are expected to be a part of this process.

Parents are asked to emphasize to their children to:

Get a good night's rest the night before.

Eat a healthy breakfast prior to arriving at school.

Take their time on the test; read entire questions; and look for key words.

Arrive for the test with plenty of time to mentally prepare and not be rushed to begin.

Go to the restroom before entering the testing environment.

Do their very best on these tests!

State law requires all students in eleventh grade to pass all TAKS in order to graduate. Students in the fifth and eighth grade must pass the reading and math portions of the test to be promoted.

TAKS Test Information

The TAKS writing test for 7th graders will be on Wednesday, March 3, 2010. The entire 7th grade class will be participating in the state administered test. Please do not schedule appointments for your child on this date since the test is untimed and students are allowed all day to take the exam. We will begin testing at 8:20 on this date, and your child will benefit from plenty of sleep and a healthy breakfast. For testing, students should bring a bottled water labeled with their name; the school will provide a snack. Students are expected to be in school the entire day. Students may not call to go home once they have finished testing as this would be a violation of the compulsory school attendance law.
There are explicit standards from the state in administering the test. The students are not allowed to have possession of cell phones during testing. The test administrator will take the cell phone and store it for the duration of the test. The cell phone will be returned after all tests are collected. If possible, it will be beneficial for cell phones to remain at home on March 3, 2010. Any student in possession of a cell phone after the teacher collects the phones will be subject to strict disciplinary action.
Students will not be allowed to have access to a backpack or a purse during testing. Backpacks, as always, are stored in student lockers. Purses that are brought to the testing site will be collected by the test administrator and stored in the classroom. Upon collection of all test booklets, purses will be returned to students. There will be no access to backpacks or purses once they are collected, and there are no exceptions to this state mandated rule.
We have been preparing for this test all school year, and we are confident of the students’ performance. Dates for the upcoming April 2010 TAKS tests are on the school website. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teachers. Thank you for your constant support in your child’s education.

Adding and Subtracting Integers

We have used a few methods for modeling integer addition...

Below is the Numberline Method. The first models 7 + (-10). We simply moved 7 spaces to the RIGHT for POSITIVE 7, and (from this spot +7) move 10 spaces to the LEFT for NEGATIVE 10. You will end up on the solution: -3

The next way to model integer addition is the Integer Chip Method. Below is 7 + (-6) modeled with integer chips. We circle the red and yellow positive/negative pairs, called ZERO PAIRS. What is left over is the solution, in this case: 1!

Finally, we learned some rules about adding and subtracting integers. When you have a problem with two signs (+/-) right next to each other, you can use the NEIGHBOR RULE to eliminate the double signs. (+/- gives you a - and -/- gives you a +)

-4 + (-1) = -4 -1

3 - (-2) = 3 + 2

Hispanic Heritage Month at the Williamson Museum

Partnering with citizens interested in celebrating and promoting Hispanic heritage in Williamson County, The Williamson Museum is seeking help from area residents to expand the Hispanic representation in its photographic collections. During Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15), we are seeking photographs, both old and new, for inclusion in photographic collections and exhibitions. Selected photographs will be used in exhibits at the Round Rock Public Library and The Williamson Museum in May 2010.

The Williamson Museum is hosting two sessions where individuals may submit a photograph, either to be scanned or the original print, providing historical information and signing a release form so that the photograph(s) may be used in future endeavors. Donors are welcome to submit more than one photograph.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Lisa Worley, Museum Curator, at 512-943-1673 or lworley@williamsonmuseum.org to set up an appointment on Saturday, September 26, or Saturday, October 3, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The fifth delivery was a law office, where Ramon left half his packages and picked up 1. On his sixth delivery to a video game design company, Ramon left 6 packages, all that he had left.
