The entire 7th grade class will be participating in the state administered test. Please do not schedule appointments for your child on this date since the test is untimed and students are allowed all day to take the exam. We will begin testing at 8:20 on this date, and your child will benefit from plenty of sleep and a healthy breakfast. For testing, students should bring a bottled water labeled with their name; the school will provide a snack. Students are expected to be in school the entire day. Students may not call to go home once they have finished testing as this would be a violation of the compulsory school attendance law.
There are explicit standards from the state in administering the test. The students are not allowed to have possession of cell phones during testing. The test administrator will take the cell phone and store it for the duration of the test. The cell phone will be returned after all tests are collected. If possible, it will be beneficial for cell phones to remain at home on March 3, 2010. Any student in possession of a cell phone after the teacher collects the phones will be subject to strict disciplinary action.
Students will not be allowed to have access to a backpack or a purse during testing. Backpacks, as always, are stored in student lockers. Purses that are brought to the testing site will be collected by the test administrator and stored in the classroom. Upon collection of all test booklets, purses will be returned to students. There will be no access to backpacks or purses once they are collected, and there are no exceptions to this state mandated rule.
We have been preparing for this test all school year, and we are confident of the students’ performance. Dates for the upcoming April 2010 TAKS tests are on the school website. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teachers. You received change of $1.70. On your way home, you forgot how many letters you had sent and how many cards you had sent. A letter costs $0.39 to mail and a card costs $0.24. The first models 7 + (-10). We simply moved 7 spaces to the RIGHT for POSITIVE 7, and (from this spot +7) move 10 spaces to the LEFT for NEGATIVE 10. You will end up on the solution: -3

The next way to model integer addition is the Integer Chip Method. Below is 7 + (-6) modeled with integer chips. We circle the red and yellow positive/negative pairs, called ZERO PAIRS. What is left over is the solution, in this case: 1!

7 + (-6 )

Finally, we learned some rules about adding and subtracting integers. The test will be next Wednesday (September 9); I will assign a "Problem of the Week" each Monday and the answer will be due (in the 4 step format) each Friday. The basic strategy we will be using for solving word problems is:
The 4 step plan - SEE, PLAN, DO, CHECK

See-
Read the problem out loud.
Circle or Highlight the important words and numbers
Underline the Question and Restate in your own words

Plan-
Choose a strategy:
Work Backwards
Guess and Check
Simplify the problem
Use a chart or table
Make an organized list
Draw a picture or diagram
Act it out or use objects
Find a pattern
Use Logic
Eliminate wrong/unreasonable answers

Do -
Show ALL your work and draw a box around your answer

Check -
Is your answer reasonable? I hope you will help me become a partner in your child’s education this upcoming school year. Although I see your child for a small part of the day, I would like to make a meaningful contribution. You can find more about what your child is doing in Math class by visiting this site regularly or adding our "feed" to your own personal homepage. It's really easy! Under "RSS: Add updates," click on the orange Posts button on the sidebar (to the right!) to add our class posts onto your Yahoo! or Gmail homepage.

Click here for the Class Syllabus

I know that teaching must begin with making your child feel comfortable in the classroom, and with helping all the children come together into a learning community made up of unique individuals, each with their own learning styles, interests, history, and hopes. Feel free to provide me any information about your child. Do you know what RRISD high school academy your child wants to attend? What college or trade school?

What is your child like? What are things you as the parent know would be important for me to know? What are your child’s interests? How does your child spend his or her free time? How do you see your child as a learner and person?

I happily accept email at will@waghorne.net To reach me by phone, contact Hopewell Middle School a call (512)464-5317. Thanks in advance for your effort and I look forward to working with you and your child.

Mr. Waghorne's Supply List

3 spiral notebooks (1 subject)

1 pocket portfolio folders w/prongs, green

$14 Cash, Check (To: Hopewell Middle School and incl.
