A SCORY STORY: Victor’s golf game started out poorly. He scored a triple bogey (three strokes over par) on the first hole and a double bogey (two strokes over per) on the second hole. However, on the third hole, victor scored a birdie (one stroke under par); and on the fourth hole, he scored a bogey (one stroke over par). How many strokes over or under par was Victor at the end of the fourth hole?

At a school fair, Julie, Anna, and Henry were in charge of the booth selling houseplants. By the end of the day, they had sold a total of 28 plants. Julie sold twice as many plants as Anna. No one sold more than 12 plants. How many plants did each person sell?

You took $5.00 to the post office and bought stamps to mail letters and cards to ten friends. You received change of $1.70. On your way home, you forgot how many letters you had sent and how many cards you had sent. A letter costs $0.39 to mail and a card costs $0.24. How many cards were sent and how many letters?

Use the 4 Step Plan and turn in on Friday, October 2nd

The basic format for a correct answer in the P.O.W. 4 Step Plan is below:

SEE:
What is the question asking? Restate in your own words.
What do I know? List all important facts from the question (or circle/highlight on the printed question and underline the question)

PLAN:
Because you know how many total pieces of mail were sent (10) and you know how
much each cost to send, you can use what method to find out how many letters were mailed and how many cards were mailed: Work Backwards, Guess and Check, Draw a Picture, Make a List...

DO: Show your work and Box your answer

CHECK:
If the sum of the cost of ___ stamps for the letters is $_____, and the cost of the stamps for the cards $______. Together that equals $______, then that added with the change $_______ should equal $5.00.

Maria receives $50 for her birthday. She decides to put the money into a bank account and start saving her money from babysitting in order to buy a television that costs $200. After the first week she has $74. After the second week , she has $98. And after the third week she has $122. How many weeks will Maria have to save at the same rate in order to buy the television? How much is she saving each week?

Use the 4-step Plan to solve the problem. Refer to your handout in the ISN (Interactive Student Notebook) if needed.

We have used a few methods for modeling integer addition...
Below is the Numberline Method. The first models 7 + (-10). We simply moved 7 spaces to the RIGHT for POSITIVE 7, and (from this spot +7) move 10 spaces to the LEFT for NEGATIVE 10. You will end up on the solution: -3

The next way to model integer addition is the Integer Chip Method. Below is 7 + (-6) modeled with integer chips. We circle the red and yellow positive/negative pairs, called ZERO PAIRS. What is left over is the solution, in this case: 1!
7 + (-6 )

Finally, we learned some rules about adding and subtracting integers. When you have a problem with two signs (+/-) right next to each other, you can use the NEIGHBOR RULE to eliminate the double signs. (+/- gives you a - and -/- gives you a +)
-4 + (-1) = -4 -1
3 - (-2) = 3 + 2

Partnering with citizens interested in celebrating and promoting Hispanic heritage in Williamson County, The Williamson Museum is seeking help from area residents to expand the Hispanic representation in its photographic collections. During Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15), we are seeking photographs, both old and new, for inclusion in photographic collections and exhibitions. Selected photographs will be used in exhibits at the Round Rock Public Library and The Williamson Museum in May 2010.

The Williamson Museum is hosting two sessions where individuals may submit a photograph, either to be scanned or the original print, providing historical information and signing a release form so that the photograph(s) may be used in future endeavors. Donors are welcome to submit more than one photograph.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Lisa Worley, Museum Curator, at 512-943-1673 or lworley@williamsonmuseum.org to set up an appointment on Saturday, September 26, or Saturday, October 3, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The mission of the Museum is to collect and interpret items that promote the unique culture and heritage of Williamson County. For more information, The Williamson Museum’s website at www.williamsonmuseum.org.

Problem of the Week #3: Due on Sep 18

Riding the Rail
A monorail that crosses the amusement park leaves its western terminal at 9:05 a.m. and arrives at the eastern terminal at 9:35. It makes 3 stops along the route. The monorail left the terminal with 25 passengers on board. At the first stop, 5 passengers departed and 8 passengers boarded. At the second stop, 12 passengers departed and 8 passengers boarded. At the 3rd stop, 9 passengers departed and 6 passengers boarded. The monorail then proceeded without stopping to the eastern terminal.

Use the 4-step plan to solve: How many passengers were on the monorail when it arrived at the eastern terminal?

Ramon has a summer job as a bike messenger in downtown Austin. This morning his first stop was an insurance office where he picked up some packages. His instructions were to drop off 1/2 of those packages at a 2nd building and pick up two more packages. His third stop was a medical building where he dropped off 1/2 of his packages and picked up 7. At his 4th stop, he dropped off 1/4 of his packages and picked up 1 more. The fifth delivery was a law office, where Ramon left half his packages and picked up 1. On his sixth delivery to a video game design company, Ramon left 6 packages, all that he had left. Then he took a lunch break. How many packages did Ramon deliver, in all, before lunch?

Guiding Questions/Hints:
What is the question you have to answer?
What do you know about Ramon's sixth stop?

"Problem Solving" strategies from the first few weeks of school will be used over and over throughout the year. The test will be next Wednesday (September 9); I will assign a "Problem of the Week" each Monday and the answer will be due (in the 4 step format) each Friday. The basic strategy we will be using for solving word problems is:
The 4 step plan - SEE, PLAN, DO, CHECK

See-
Read the problem out loud.
Circle or Highlight the important words and numbers
Underline the Question and Restate in your own words

Plan-
Choose a strategy:
Work Backwards
Guess and Check
Simplify the problem
Use a chart or table
Make an organized list
Draw a picture or diagram
Act it out or use objects
Find a pattern
Use Logic
Eliminate wrong/unreasonable answers

Do -
Show ALL your work and draw a box around your answer

Check -
Is your answer reasonable? (Does it make sense?)

Unit Organizer

Thanks for all the quick and eager responses regarding school supplies, parent/guardian contact information, and RRISD packets. Your students are already hard at work this school year, and soon they will have a Math Portfolio ready to bring home to show off to you and use for their studies. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Remember, Hopewell M.S. Open House is Thursday, September 10th. I would love to introduce myself personally to each and every parent and guardian.

The Course Organizer, below, gives students and parents an introduction to Mr. Waghorne's class and 7th Grade Math, in general.

Welcome

(Spanish version)

Welcome to Mr. Waghorne's 7th Grade Math Class Blog! I hope you will help me become a partner in your child’s education this upcoming school year. Although I see your child for a small part of the day, I would like to make a meaningful contribution. You can find more about what your child is doing in Math class by visiting this site regularly or adding our "feed" to your own personal homepage. It's really easy! Under "RSS: Add updates," click on the orange Posts button on the sidebar (to the right!) to add our class posts onto your Yahoo! or Gmail homepage.

Click here for the Class Syllabus

I know that teaching must begin with making your child feel comfortable in the classroom, and with helping all the children come together into a learning community made up of unique individuals, each with their own learning styles, interests, history, and hopes. Feel free to provide me any information about your child. Do you know what RRISD high school academy your child wants to attend? What college or trade school?

What is your child like? What are things you as the parent know would be important for me to know? What are your child’s interests? How does your child spend his or her free time? How do you see your child as a learner and person?

I happily accept email at will@waghorne.net To reach me by phone, contact Hopewell Middle School a call (512)464-5317. Thanks in advance for your effort and I look forward to working with you and your child.
