A SCORY STORY: Victor’s golf game started out poorly. He scored a triple bogey (three strokes over par) on the first hole and a double bogey (two strokes over per) on the second hole. However, on the third hole, victor scored a birdie (one stroke under par); and on the fourth hole, he scored a bogey (one stroke over par). How many strokes over or under par was Victor at the end of the fourth hole?

At a school fair, Julie, Anna, and Henry were in charge of the booth selling houseplants. By the end of the day, they had sold a total of 28 plants. Julie sold twice as many plants as Anna. No one sold more than 12 plants. How many plants did each person sell?

On your way home, you forgot how many letters you had sent and how many cards you had sent. A letter costs $0.39 to mail and a card costs $0.24. How many cards were sent and how many letters?

The basic format for a correct answer in the P.O.W. 4 Step Plan is below:

SEE:
What is the question asking? Restate in your own words.
What do I know? List all important facts from the question (or circle/highlight on the printed question and underline the question)

PLAN:
Because you know how many total pieces of mail were sent (10) and you know how
much each cost to send, you can use what method to find out how many letters were mailed and how many cards were mailed: Work Backwards, Guess and Check, Draw a Picture, Make a List...

DO: Show your work and Box your answer

CHECK:
If the sum of the cost of ___ stamps for the letters is $_____, and the cost of the stamps for the cards $______. Together that equals $______, then that added with the change $_______ should equal $5.00.

Maria receives $50 for her birthday. She decides to put the money into a bank account and start saving her money from babysitting in order to buy a television that costs $200. After the first week she has $74. After the second week , she has $98. And after the third week she has $122. How many weeks will Maria have to save at the same rate in order to buy the television? How much is she saving each week?

Riding the Rail
A monorail that crosses the amusement park leaves its western terminal at 9:05 a.m. and arrives at the eastern terminal at 9:35. It makes 3 stops along the route. The monorail left the terminal with 25 passengers on board. At the first stop, 5 passengers departed and 8 passengers boarded. At the second stop, 12 passengers departed and 8 passengers boarded. At the 3rd stop, 9 passengers departed and 6 passengers boarded. The monorail then proceeded without stopping to the eastern terminal.

Use the 4-step plan to solve: How many passengers were on the monorail when it arrived at the eastern terminal?

Ramon has a summer job as a bike messenger in downtown Austin. This morning his first stop was an insurance office where he picked up some packages. His instructions were to drop off 1/2 of those packages at a 2nd building and pick up two more packages. His third stop was a medical building where he dropped off 1/2 of his packages and picked up 7. At his 4th stop, he dropped off 1/4 of his packages and picked up 1 more. The fifth delivery was a law office, where Ramon left half his packages and picked up 1. On his sixth delivery to a video game design company, Ramon left 6 packages, all that he had left. Then he took a lunch break. How many packages did Ramon deliver, in all, before lunch?
